One dead in fresh clashes in Kashmir on Eid

In Srinagar, Indian Kashmir’s main city, calls to prayer ringing out from mosques went largely unanswered on Tuesday, as families in the Muslim-majority region heeded a curfew that made celebrating Eid nigh impossible.

Violence has been reported in 10 areas of the region.

The authorities have asked various mobile service operators across Jammu region to suspend mobile Internet facilities in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi district of Jammu province, an official communique issued to mobile service operators read.

For the very first time since militancy marked its presence in Kashmir, the state government has made a decision to impose curfew across the Kashmir Valley for peaceful observance of Eid-ul-Adha on Tuesday.

Shops and businesses were closed, with a curfew in effect in the entire Kashmir Valley. Ten others were also injured in the street fighting.

Security personnel have been deployed in Srinagar and other places in the valley. A civilian in a mosque died, apparently of heart attack, after a tear smoke shell crashed into the shrine at Awantipora town in Pulwama district.

Army troops have already been stationed at vantage points in rural areas which have a history of violent protests, police said, adding curfew came in force from midnight. More than 10,000 have been reported injured in clashes between security forces and the citizens. Five of the seven injured policemen were critical and have been shifted to Srinagar for treatment.

Meanwhile, Human rights watchdog Amnesty International accused India of using excessive force against protesters in Kashmir.

“It was also chose to put all places under aerial surveillance by pressing unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) into service to keep the tab on the activities of miscreants and subversive elements”.

He added, “India is violating worldwide standards and worsening the human rights crisis in the state”. The latter succumbed to pellet injuries to his chest and hands.
