Yet it’s the question of whether Jones reacted in an instance of self defense that has stirred debate, with a prosecutor according to a report via newsday telling there is no indication of self-defense. The others injured in the shooting are Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring.

Police say it’s not clear whether Jones was armed during the confrontation or if he left to get the gun and returned. Our Abbey was holding the other, second one shot, and was calling 911 as Nick was shot. The suspected gunman was a pledge in another fraternity – Sigma Chi, according to that organization’s national office.

Sigma Chi Executive Director Michael Church sent his condolences to the victims. “It’s not that we are bloodthirsty, it’s that we want to protect ourselves and our families”.

Texas Southern University President John M. Rudley confirmed the shooting as well as the fatality and said guns are too “easily accessible”.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey tweeted, “Praying for @NAU and the victims of this morning’s shooting”. Counseling centers are now set up for students and staff. “This is not going to be normal day at NAU our hearts are heavy”, Cheng added. Students were notified about the shooting by text and social media.

Megan said fellow students frantically contacted one another.

The incident occurred outside Mountainview Hall dormitory, but authorities said they could not immediately say what led up to the confrontation.

“There is a huge community here and everyone is reaching out and making sure everyone’s okay”.

“Nick ran to help his friend”, Earl Norcutt, who said he was at an emergency room in Flagstaff, wrote in a Facebook post.

The suspected gunman in Flagstaff, Arizona, is 18-year-old student Steven Jones, who surrendered to police.

One shooting victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where the person later died.
