One Direction Wins ARTIST OF THE YEAR at American Music Awards

Justin Bieber closed the show with a series of songs from his new album including an acoustic rendition of “What Do You Mean“, followed by a high tempo performance of “Where Are U Now”, where Bieber showed off his dancing skills. Purple laser lights beamed from the stage as the singer danced and sang for the loud audience. Eager to stand out in an increasingly crowded award-show scene, the production doubled down on would-be big moments but ended up sacrificing much of its breezy charm.

Justin Bieber officially marked a comeback and he celebrated at the AMAs: His new album, “Purpose”, debuted on top of the Billboard charts on Monday, beating One Direction. It beat out One Direction’s “Made In the A.M.”, which sold 459,000 equivalent albums.

Celine Dion performed the French classic made famous by Edith Piaf, “L’Hymne a L’Amour”, in front of a string section and a montage of images of famous Paris sites.

In introducing the songstress, Jared Leto said the attacks in Paris and Mali this month have “changed the world forever” and scarred its population. Obligatory admiration was observed for One Direction, performing “Perfect” for their gazillionth broadcast appearance this week.

The Weeknd’s performance was also a favorite, and he walked away with two awards, and presented the first one from Prince.

Toronto born-R&B singer The Weeknd was declared Favourite Male Artist (soul/R&B), and his album Beauty Behind the Madness garnered him the Favorite Album (Soul/R&B) accolade.

However, even the admiration of her fans, which resulted in Minaj bringing home the AMA hardware, failed to warm her up as she was seen rolling her eyes while walking off stage. She also encouraged her fans by saying “please find your voice and find your objective before it’s too late”.

Early performances that are worth noting include Selena Gomez performing “Same Old Love“, Demi Lovato singing “Confident” and then later taking the stage again in a duet with Alanis Morissette, singing her 1995 song “You Oughta Know“, and Carrie Underwood singing “Heartbeat“.

She was joined onstage by performer Charlie Puth for their song “Marvin Gaye“, and they shared a passionate kiss at the end of the song! Grande also gave a shout-out to her “nonna” – who was in the audience.

But she was beaten to Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist by Ariana Grande, who performed her new single Focus.
