That’s the last day to enroll in a health plan if you want insurance coverage that starts January 1.

More than 1 million new customers have signed up for insurance on the federal insurance exchange Healthcare.gov serving and the site is developing near-deadline momentum, federal officials said Wednesday. But consumers wanting coverage at the beginning of the year need to sign up by December 15.

The lone health insurance cooperative to make money past year on the Affordable Care Act’s public insurance exchanges is now losing millions and cutting off individual enrollment for 2016.

Insurance officials told the forum the average increase in premiums for private health insurance will be about 4 percent next year. While this money isn’t given directly on the employee’s paycheck, it is essentially used to pay for premiums that would otherwise come out of the employee’s pocket.

Most Americans get insurance from their employers, their spouses or parents, Medicare, or Medicaid, so they don’t have to worry about this deadline at all.

More than 7.8 million uninsured rural Americans under 65 have gained new opportunities to enroll in affordable health care in the past year, and nationwide, an estimated 17.6 million Americans have found health coverage.

According to The Hill, the figures indicate that the administration is likely to surpass its goal of enrolling 900,000 new consumers in exchange plans.

United said it intends to stop paying sales commissions to agents who sell the company’s health policies under the ACA, the federal insurance program that provides financial subsidies to attract uninsured people and low-income applicants.

The penalty has more than doubled for the upcoming year. People who do not have some form of health coverage after that date are subject to a tax penalty, which in 2016 will be the greater of $695 per adult, or 2.5 percent of adjusted household income.

A health care provider or facility would need to provide written disclosure at least 30 days before the procedure, telling consumers: whether the provider is in the insurance companies’ network and an estimate of the cost.

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) passed a healthcare provision restricting the risk corridor provision of the ACA past year via a spending law that is having a big effect on the health insurance market. Compare healthcare plans so that you can find the best one for you, and sign up before the enrollment period ends. The website has a cost calculator under the “Health Insurance Marketplace” tab, and a link to a database of certified brokers under the “Get Help” tab.

Under the law, the tax penalties will increase next year.

Pointing to a major worker layoff in the Muscle Shoals, Ala., area, a reporter prompted a note from the administrators that states Marketplace plans are based on 2016 salaries, not 2015.

Slavitt said that “returning consumers can save about $600 in premiums” by coming back to HealthCare.gov to actively shop, as opposed to accepting automatic re-enrollment.
