Officials initially said about 100 inmates were involved and five hospitalized.
Correctional officers first tried using pepper spray to break up the fight, but when that didn’t work, they fired three warning shots.
Konrad said most of the injuries were stab wounds but would not discuss what sparked the riot.
The dead inmate was identified as Hugo Pinell, age 71.
A dispute on Wednesday at the state prison of California ended with an inmate death and 5 other people injured.
Pinell was initially committed to CDCR on February 17, 1965 from San Francisco County to serve a life with parole sentence for rape with force.
Fighting broke out at Folsom prison in Sacramento around 1pm on Wednesday as inmates used homemade weapons, authorities said. He gained infamy as a member of the San Quentin 6, a radical civil rights group that attempted to escape from that prison in 1971.

It added that prisoners’ movements would be limited as the investigation into disturbance unfolded. In March 1971, he was convicted of killing a prison guard at a correctional facility in Soledad, California.
