Police said the bus hit the driver side of the pickup, which then caused a chain reaction crash, and the bus hit another auto.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. on East Third Street near the off ramp of Interstate 277, and polcie ahd to shut down East Third Street for hours.
Per standard procedure after an accident, the driver of CATS bus will undergo a drug/alcohol screening, CATS officials told Channel 9.
The driver of the silver vehicle involved in the crash talked with WCNC after the crash; she didn’t want to speak on camera, but said she was driving next to the bus along 3rd Street when their light turned green.
A 1987 Ford F-150 was passing through the intersection during a red light when it was struck by the CATS bus. The names of the drivers, the person who died and those injured had not been released late Monday. The driver of the bus has been identified as 58-year-old Priscilla Chisolm. The representative says the bus driver will not be allowed back on the road until after the investigation is over.
The victims were taken to Carolinas Medical Center and Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment.
