One Of Brexit’s Main Architects Is Stepping Down As Party Leader

Nigel Farage on Monday stepped down as leader of UKIP as the shockwaves from Britain’s decision to quit the European Union continue to rock the country’s political order.

The reason is apparently work-life balance.

Farage said whoever was next chosen to lead the country should be a “Brexit prime minister”.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Farage also said now he has nothing left to achieve.

Leadsom, who went into politics after a career in financial services, says she would keep the negotiations on an exit deal with the 27 other EU countries as short as possible, because “neither we nor our European friends need prolonged uncertainty”.

MEP Paul Nuttall, who is seen as one of the favourites to replace outgoing leader Nigel Farage, insisted the party needs to come together to take advantage of the internal strife rocking Labour.

He insisted Monday that “I won’t be changing my mind again, I promise you”.

The post Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage quits as UKIP leader appeared first on Punch Newspapers.

“But it has come at a cost to me and perhaps to those around me”, the MEP said.

He said he would not be backing any particular candidate to succeed him as UKIP leader. Singer Lily Allen tweeted a photo on Sunday of Farage and Rupert Murdoch at a garden party.

Farage is leaving politics at an especially divided time for the U.K. The country chose to leave Europe as he advocated, but the decision only got 52 percent of the vote. He suggested he would return in some capacity in the 2020 election.

UKIP was not part of the official “Vote Leave” group during the referendum campaign, but leaving the European Union has been the party’s single issue.

However, he unresigned two days later, triggering a fracturing of relations with Evans – who has since been suspended by the party – and UKIP’s only MP, Douglas Carswell.

The 44-year-old noted Mr Farage, along with Mr Johnson, were two of the “biggest beasts” in the Brexit campaign yet Mr Farage has since announced his resignation and Mr Johnson distanced himself from running for Tory leadership and potential Prime Minister.

Farage then became a founding member of the UKIP, which opposed Maastricht and had a mandate to move Britain away from Europe.

Farage, who has dedicated his career to campaigning against Britain’s European Union membership, explained that his “political career has been achieved”.

The referendum result marked a personal success for Farage, who in the early 1990s helped to found a party later described by Cameron as “a bunch of fruitcakes, loonies, and closet racists”.
