One-on-one with Senate Majority Leader McConnell on Trump, gun control and sports

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus Friday introduced Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania – extolling him as “the next president of the United States” and telling supporters “don’t believe the garbage you read” about unity problems within the party.

A draft of the letter, obtained by various US news organizations, warns that the Republican presidential candidate’s “divisiveness, recklessness, incompetence and record-breaking unpopularity risk turning this election into a Democratic landslide”.

As Trump’s campaign has tailspun in public polling, pressure has mounted on the RNC to pull back on its support for Trump or withdraw its resources entirely, redirecting them instead to defend vulnerable House and Senate seats.

In a rare show of humility by the boastful billionaire, Donald Trump is acknowledging that his presidential campaign faces challenges and could ultimately fall short.

In a letter to the RNC this week, first reported on by Politico, dozens of Republican strategists and former lawmakers pressed the issue.

Not only haven’t previous Republican presidential nominees not backed Trump, but both living former Republican presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, have abstained from supporting the 2016 GOP ticket.

“Republicans want to see a campaign that has a clear strategic direction that reflects reality and is backed up by a disciplined message and resources”, said Rath. “We never had a conversation about that”, Trump said in a Tuesday interview with Time. It’s unclear how much can be discussed and agreed upon without Trump, who himself is singlehandedly responsible for the racism, hatred, and violence he expresses every day. “They’re false, they’re deceptive, and they know they’re false”, said Trump last week in New Hampshire.

“Trump won’t let you down, in my opinion, as opposed to Hillary”, said Prentiss Benson.

“Believe me, a vote for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton is easy for me”.

After trouncing 16 challengers in the Republican primary, Trump is encountering worrying signs as his campaign moves into the general election.

The RNC chairman reportedly told Trump that he would have been better off staying at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida since the Republican National Convention last month.

Clinton’s lead over Trump in opinion polls has widened in recent days, while a growing number of Republicans have warned they won’t support their party’s nominee.

Sit and wait: Some disaffected Republicans think their best option is to just denounce Mr Trump and hope for better luck next time.

“I would say they could be tried there”, Trump said. The GOP has 54 seats, while Democrats have 44. According to Politico, their sources say he’ll be meeting with top RNC members as tension has been building between the GOP and Trump’s campaign. “I’m putting up money from my own campaign, but I’m raising a lot of money for the Republican party”.
