One Victim Still in Critical Condition Following Philadelphia Shooting Spree

A day after a mass shooting targeting police officers left two wounded and one bystander dead, Philly cops were again put in the line of fire during a routine beat patrol on one of the busiest streets in the city. Police said Miller was shot in the pelvis and right ankle.

The gunman, 25-year-old Nicholas Glenn, was killed in a shootout with police.

Ross said Glenn had a 9mm Ruger and at least three magazines, as well as a plastic bag with 13-15 live rounds. That suspect was killed by police, but not before he shot another officer in the leg. Police did not fire a shot during Sunday morning’s incident.

“Obviously, he was hellbent on hurting a lot of people”, the commissioner said at a news conference, adding that “we aren’t absolutely clear as to why”. He said Glenn was well-known to the police department. Young was struck up to eight times.

The gunman fired into a bar, which had its door open, wounding a security guard, police said.

The woman died and the man is expected to survive, he said. “This rambling suggests that he clearly was trying to target a police officer, as he did”.

Several people were injured, several critically, in unrelated shootings overnight.

The wild chase and shootout through the streets of Philadelphia began about 11:20 p.m. Friday when Sgt. Sylvia Young was ambushed while sitting in her patrol auto; she was shot a number of times in the arm and protective vest, Ross said. He also fired into a bar, injuring a security guard, and grabbed a woman and later shot her, then fired into a auto, hitting a man and woman.

In a “rambling” letter marked “Doomed People” found by police on Glenn, the shooter indicated “his hatred for police officers and probation”. Police say the man then ran into a driveway in the 500 block of Darien Street.

Commissioner Richard Ross said, “This is a completely freakish situation”. Ross joined in commending his officers, saying they largely refrained from firing their weapons to preserve public safety. “This is completely a freaky situation”, Ross said. She was shot a number of times in the arm and protective vest, Ross said. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition. Moments later, Glenn shot into a vehicle, hitting a man and a woman in the chest. The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police tweeted a photo of the visit. Two 23-year-old women and a 29-year-old woman are in stable condition at Temple. A 44-year-old man and a man in his 50s were sitting in a auto.

Police say a female sergeant with the Philadelphia police was injured along with an officer from the University of Pennsylvania. A few blocks away, a young woman and her boyfriend pulled up to her apartment.
