OnePlus Acknowledges Type-C Cable Could Cause Damage, Offers Refunds
Earlier today, OnePlus has issued a statement officially acknowledging that its USB Type-C cables and adapters can cause damage to external power sources. Should OnePlus offer replacement, standard-compliant USB Type-C cables and adapters to those who’ve purchased its second-generation “Flagship Killer”? The compelling feature however is the other end having a reversible USB Type A connection.

USB Type-C is still new for the smartphone market but offerings like the OnePlus 2 already featured the same to take on the competition. OnePlus says that its USB Type-C cable and adapter will not create any trouble as long as they are being used with the OnePlus 2. However, OnePlus told BGR India that its adapter and charging cables were perfectly safe for the OnePlus 2. As an owner of a few of these cables they really will be a great product when they’re safe to use with Nexus devices. The company said the OnePlus Type-C adapter is “partially” compatible with some third-party devices, and could damage power sources if the device and the power source don’t have a self-regulation mechanism.
“The issue is that the cable and adapter are designed for a maximum of 2 amps of power, but the resistor will allow fast-charging devices to try to draw more power than a power source may allow”. For these kind of devices, chargers with a CE, UL or CCC logo on it are certified as safe to use. The USB Type-C standard, unfortunately, calls for the use of 56kΩ resistors. Users in India and China can visit their nearest OnePlus service centre to claim the refund.
If you’re based in North America or Europe, you can fill out the form at this link, and you’ll be refunded directly through PayPal.

Meanwhile, the company is working on a fix to make its Type-C cables and adapters meet global USB Type-C standard. No date announced yet for when we can expect those in but, looking at the December 31 deadline for refunds of the old cables, that date is hopefully sometime in January at the latest.
