Rajender Sharma, a committee member of the Azadpur mandi, said inconsistent rainfall had led to low production, which sent prices soaring, and that this trend will continue until September.
Even the Delhi government has been selling onions at a highly subsidised rate of Rs 30/kg in 280 locations, but the prices have continued to rise.
The MEP was last increased from $ 250 per MT to $ 425 per MT on June 26 this year.
At Mother Dairy’s Safal outlets, onion is being sold at around Rs 40/kg, while 100 DMS booths is selling it at Rs 35.
70 per kg mark on Thursday with most people complaining that the government was not doing enough to contain price rise.
The government on Saturday hiked the minimum export price (MEP) of onions sharply by $275 (nearly Rs 18,202) per tonne to curb shipments and boost domestic supply to control spiraling retail prices that have touched up to Rs 80 per kg in some markets.
But the onions procured were never released into the market, it said.
Mumbai:In Asia’s biggest wholesale market of onions at Lasalgoan in Maharashtra, onion prices today hiked to Rs 43 per kg due to sharp decline in arrival of the crop. The department of food and civil supplies is also keeping a tab on the supply and prices of onions in the national capital, a government spokesperson said. 39 per kg and this would last through the Onam week. “This means, the supply situation would remain under pressure as arrival of fresh crop is expected to be delayed, which may put further pressure on prices”, he added.
“The shortfall has primarily been on account of adverse weather conditions including unseasonal rains which has impacted both the standing and harvested crop at the major producing centres”, he added. A decision was also taken by the Government of Delhi to sell onions at a subsidized rate of Rs.
“Not only has NAFED committed irregularities in procurement of onions and misused the onion PSF scheme, but the Central government has itself asked the NAFED to cancel a global tender it had planned to float for import of onions”, AAP said.

But the wholesale market claimed that the retail prices of onion will further shoot up as its prices in the states which are producing onion has gone up.
