Ontario climate change plan to be out soon
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a particular goal in mind – he wants to nail down a national plan to take down greenhouse gas emissions before an worldwide climate change summit later this month.

The government of Alberta, Canada has announced in a press release its Climate Leadership Plan that will accelerate the transition from coal to renewable electricity sources, puts a price on carbon pollution, and sets emission limits for oil sands.
Notley told a room of supporters at Edmonton’s science centre.
“Premier Notley’s new plan for Alberta is a real and vital contribution to that effort”.
“We’ll demonstrate that we are serious about climate change”, Trudeau said following a four-hour working dinner with provincial and territorial leaders.
“It was all a very tight timeline, because obviously, the premier wanted this announcement in the bag… before she goes to Paris”, he added.
“We are studying the announcements from the Alberta government to assess their impact on our existing operations and possible future projects in Alberta”, Imperial spokesman Pius Rolheiser said in an email Monday.
Notley said the carbon-pricing strategy is similar to plans being implemented in California and Canada’s French-speaking province of Quebec.
Coal generation now accounts for nearly a fifth of emissions in Alberta.
Trudeau has promised to meet with the first ministers again within 90 days of Paris to hammer out the details.
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said Paris presents an opportunity to “rebrand” Canada.
“Finally, we have been in regular contact with the province’s royalty review panel, and where appropriate, they will be accounting for any increases in costs brought about by new greenhouse gas policies in making their recommendations”, the climate change panel’s report said. “In this way, we will do our part to address climate change while protecting jobs and industry competitiveness in Alberta”.
“We can not forget the jobs that quite literally are at stake in a sector that’s undergoing a lot of stress right now”, Wall said. “A carbon tax is simple: you’re going to be paying at every gas pump, you’re going to be paying it on home electricity and home heating”.
“I’ll be frank”, she said.
“Basically, it gives back to (companies), some of the carbon tax that they pay”, said Boothe, now an economics professor at the University of Western Ontario.
“I think those who voted to further encumber the refugee process are accountable for their vote”. Oil-sands wells require steam injections to leach out crude embedded in sand, a process that burns up to 1,000 cubic feet of natural gas to produce a single barrel of oil.
Environment Minister Glen Murray says the province plans to achieve an 80-percent reduction in emissions over 1990 levels by 2050, with a 15-percent reduction by 2020.
The Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors cautioned the climate policy could imperil Alberta’s competitiveness, unless it’s offset by lower royalties – something the province is also reviewing.

The premiers also took questions about their prospective province’s plans to take in refugees.
