Open Whisper’s Encrypted Messaging App Coming to the Desktop

The much-lauded application that has even been recommended by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, enables users to establish confidential communications thanks to the end-to-end encryption support it offers. In 2014, during an interview with The New Yorker he endorsed using Open Whisper Systems.

Signal Desktop is Chrome app that will sync messages transmitted between it and an Android device, wrote Moxie Marlinspike, a cryptography expert who had helped develop Signal, in a blog post on Wednesday. Just like the other apps, and cross-platform services, the user will be able to retrieve his contacts and conversations across all the devices.

“Today we’re making the Signal Desktop beta available”. The Signal Desktop beta will run through Google’s Chrome browser. The services in Android did exist, but it was only through Redphone and TextSecure apps, both of which were later merged to form Signal on Android. Messenger, or Apple iMessage, Signal will sync all conversations across devices, including text, images, and video.

Signal Desktop, however, now does not have this functionality for the iOS app, but hopefully the developer will bring the same feature in the near term.

In November 2015, the Open Whisper system launched protected voice calling and texting application for Android called “Signal” but soon after the massive appreciation, the company has chose to release a desktop version of this application.

Signal Desktop won’t support voice initially however it will be added at a later date. Open Whisper Systems can’t even get access to the content shared between users since the platform never stores encryption keys.
