Vorderbruggen died on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, a policy which barred openly gay men and women from military service. In 2012, Vorderbruggen married her longtime partner, Heather Lamb, and many activists considered their marriage a pivotal moment for openly gay troops.
Alongside Major Vorderbruggen, New York City Detective Joseph Lemm was also killed.
As the New York Times put it Wednesday, for advocates of gay rights in the military Vorderbruggen showed “what it took to quietly endure and ultimately overcome discrimination in the ranks”.
From Plymouth, Minnesota, she was assigned to the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, 9th Field Investigations Squadron, at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
Louis Bonacasa of Manorville, New York, was on his fourth tour of duty, his mother told CNN. Lemm, who previously served in the military from 1988 to 1996, was an NYPD detective.
Wagner said that her son had a 3-year-old daughter whom he adored and a wife who is expecting another child. Lemm had served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Staff Sgt. Peter Taub was stationed in South Dakota, but grew up in the Wyncote area, just 5 miles from Center City Philadelphia.
Chester McBride was a former football hero in a Georgia town known for championship football teams. Gen. William Shoffner said in a statement.
He was a football standout at Statesboro High School, where he played defensive back on the team that won a 2001 state championship.
Her death on Monday was almost five years to the day that “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was repealed.
“She intentionally would go on these patrols with her men because she wanted to show them that she would do what she was asking them to do”, he said. He was assigned to the 105th Security Forces Squadron based out of Stewart Air National Guard Base, New York.
He was the son and brother of a local D.C. family that owns and operates a restaurant called ‘Bub and Pop’s.’ His mother wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page: “my son, Chef Jon’s brother, Staff Sargeant Peter Taub was one of six killed yesterday in Afghanistan”.

“He will have a child that he will never see now”, Wagner said.
