The OpenStack community is in Freedland’s view, a way to stop Amazon from getting an “oligopoly” and to maintain openness in cloud. OpenStack will also go against VMware Inc. VMW, -2.37%, has been making slow progress since it was introduced in 2010 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Rackspace Hosting Inc.

“But there’s another battle going on and that is in 10 years what percentage of workloads are going to be on prem and what percentage are going to be on public cloud and what percentage will be in a dedicated private-cloud, service-provider arrangement?”

Intel’s new commitment, while not decisive, could help make the product more appealing to corporate users. “OpenStack is an ideal open solution for cloud-native applications and services, and our collaboration with Mirantis is well placed to ensure the delivery of critical new enterprise features helping to create of tens of thousands of clouds”. A slew of startups joined the OpenStack project, but many of them either disappeared, or sold their business to larger companies.

Intel’s venture-capital arm first invested in Mirantis in 2013.

Mirantis said the fresh round of funding will be used to bolster its partnerships with vendors and other organisations innovating with OpenStack.

To date Mirantis has raised at least $220 million, including the $100 million round announced last October.

The funds consist of a mix of spending and equity, and other companies who joined the party include bigwigs such as Goldman Sachs, August Capital, Ericsson, Insight Venture Partners, Sapphire Ventures and WestSummit Capital.

In 2014, there was a lot of action happened in OpenStack industry. Moreover, it is possible that Intel is setting up the stage for a huge cloud-related acquisition. Mirantis has proved its potential to the world, the reason external investors seem to be so keen to invest in the company. The company may have a long-term plan to be familiar with the upcoming cloud-based technologies and companies, since the tech industry is gradually shifting toward the new generation of data storage services. Given that most of the computers operate on Intel processors, the company can book a suite in the next generation of cloud-based services for enterprise, if the cards are played right.
