Operations halted at Srinagar airport after MIG-21 mishap

A MiG-21 fighter jet made an emergency landing at the airport here on Tuesday after developing a “technical snag” but no one including the pilot was hurt in the incident. This time, it is in the news because it crash-landed on its approach to the runway and there are reports that some aircraft have been damaged. More details about what caused the crash are awaited.

Following the incident, civilian flights to and from the Srinagar airport were stopped for some time. It handles about 560 flights every week.

The airport is situated about 12 kilometers from the city.

The plane is believed to have overshot the runway during landing.

While airport officials here said the pilot ejected, officials from the IAF said the pilot did not eject. On June 13 2016 a MiG 27 aircraft crashed in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
