Opioid abuse propels record US deaths from overdose – CDC
The overall tally of drug overdose details was released by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week, however, the agency releases more details on Friday including the numbers of the state affected. “This is a big win for the opioid lobby”, said Dr. Andrew Kolodny, co-founder of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing, a group that wants to see less use of painkillers by doctors, according to the AP.

Although the rate of heroin deaths is rising sharply, it’s still significantly outnumbered by the number of deaths caused by prescription painkillers.
Overdose deaths are up in both men and women, in whites and blacks, and in adults of almost all ages, said the report.
An astonishing new report shows that drug overdoses have been climbing to dizzying heights in 14 states.
“Although efforts to reduce reliance on opioids for the treatment of chronic pain did reduce abuse and death initially, that reduction is probably overwhelmed by the thousands of people who have already become dependent on opioids through pain treatment”, Ballantyne said. It’s also the most drug overdoses reported in the United States since 1970.
In 2014 alone, drug overdoses killed more than 47,000 people-a 7% increase from the previous year-and the most of any year on the CDC’s record.
Based on its Morbidity and Mortality Report for 2014, opioid overdose, including due to heroin and pain relievers, increased by 14% within 12 months.
“Many of these overdoses are believed to involve illicitly-made fentanyl, a short-acting opioid”, the CDC reports about the synthetic opioids deaths. Providing health care professionals with additional tools and information-including safer guidelines for prescribing these drugs-can help them make more informed prescribing decisions.
The CDC is now in the midst of a battle over prescription drugs.
Opioid painkillers accounted for a nine percent increase of deaths in 2014 to 813 people.
“These findings indicate that the opioid overdose epidemic is worsening”.

The CDC recommended a mix of limiting opioid access with law enforcement, increasing substance abuse treatment, improving access to naloxone (a drug that counteracts overdoses), and otherwise stopping users from becoming addicts. The worst thing to note is that opioids are involved in 61% of all drug overdose deaths, which is highly prescribed by doctors.
