Oppo is now the smartphone market leader in China

The smartphone market is showing signs of growth again, but barely, with shipments up almost 1 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, according to Strategy Analytics.

Back in 2014, Oppo was responsible for less than two per cent of the smartphones sold in China.

Oppo’s market share right now is also more than both Apple and Samsung combined in China, the Counterpoint Research report for the month of June showed.

Apple sold 41 million iPhones, a 15 percent drop compared with the same quarter a year ago, and revenue plunged 23 percent.

If Huawei can continue to strengthen its position as a high-end smartphone manufacturer, it’s not hard to imagine the company taking market share from the higher-up, more established brands with the promise of unique smartphones customers have never handled before.

During the quarter Samsung maintained its lead over Apple thanks to strong Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge sales.

Here Apple has about 42% of the Premium Price Band (+$400 smartphones) and OPPO has roughly 12%.

IDC confirmed what Apple said in its earnings news about the success of the lower-cost iPhone SE.

Huawei could also play a part, having recently asserted themselves as the third biggest smartphone OEM out there and essentially stopped Samsung’s growth streak cold. But sequentially, the market witnessed 3.1 percent growth from 333.1 million in the first quarter of 2016.

Will these major devices, LeEco’s strong worldwide plans, and other new models from LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, and others, halt Oppo’s charge up the charts? While Oppo saw an impressive 137% growth, they were unable to find their way anywhere near the top of the overall shipment charts. This popular vendor in China is expanding into many emerging markets including India, according to Linda Sui, director at Strategy Analytics. The revenue from the greater China region was 8.85 billion dollars, down 33 percent year on year. So when it comes to the top end of the market and profits, Apple is still number one in the industry and in China.
