OR confirms first Zika case of 2016

A post-abortion autopsy found the Zika virus in the fetus’ brain but, remarkably, no other organs, reported researchers from the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.

The case series included 29 infants with microcephaly and a presumed diagnosis of congenital Zika virus infection.

Most importantly, in light of scientific reports suggesting health risks to newborn children, health authorities in the country should focus on ensuring that pregnant women are provided safety measures such as nets, and a mosquito-free environment. The CDC confirmed the case Tuesday in an adult woman who is not pregnant.

Brazil is investigating more than 4,000 suspected cases of microcephaly and has identified evidence of Zika infection in 17 of these cases.
