Oregon begins retail marijuana sales — News Guide
Attendees of the “Normalize Marijuana” event hope recreational sales will start a conversation about breaking down stereotypes.

According to the OLCC, the state projects $10.7 million in revenue for the 2015-2017 biennium. You don’t need to be a resident of Oregon to legally purchase recreational cannabis, but you must be able to prove your age with government-issued identification at the time of purchase.
Oregon, in this reporters opinion, should treat cannabis cultivation no different, especially on a commercialized level as it’s the agriculture officials that are more apt to be versed in cultivation issues and obstacles such as molds, bugs and so forth more than those paid to bust stores for selling to minors or closing down a bar.
“There’s a lot of highly educated buyers here who have been spoiled with high-grade cannabis for years”, McKee said. “Marijuana is still a Schedule I illegal substance under federal law, so employers still have a right to fire someone if they test positive for marijuana”.
Thursday is Day 1 for buying marijuana in Oregon just for fun.
But starting Thursday, licensed medical marijuana dispensaries are allowed to sell a few types of marijuana products for recreational use.
Sgt. Peter Simpson, with the Portland Bureau of Police, told GoLocal that patrol officers will still be on the lookout for those who smoke in public places, such as parks, streets or outside bars or restaurants, as even after the passage of Measure 91, consumption of marijuana is still only allowed in a private home or other private property. Applications will be accepted starting next January 4th. But there’s been no legal way to buy it.
Also as of today, dispensaries may sell up to four immature marijuana plants to members of the public and an unlimited quantity of seeds. The District of Columbia has as well legal marijuana asset.
Prices for pot could vary.
“I’m just trying to basically stock up for maybe four or five times what the normal volume would be”, said Chris Byers, owner of River City Dispensary in the Southern Oregon town of Merlin. She said that the staff at many dispensaries are prepared for new customers, and will be ready and willing to answer any questions you may have.
According to ABC news, customers can buy seven grams of marijuana, which includes the dried flower and the leaf.
What about edibles? Can I buy those?
Medical marijuana cardholders can still purchase these products with a valid OMMP card. A proposed medical marijuana ordinance in Rainier is in its early stages.
Bill Whitlock, owner of The People’s Wellness Center on Centennial Loop in Eugene, said he planned to open his doors at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, and keep them open 24 hours a day for several days after October 1. Pettinger noted the OLCC is still in the process of hiring and building out its compliance and regulation staffs.
The health authority only oversees medical marijuana, but it is temporarily in charge of inspections ahead of Thursday’s early sales of recreational pot. There are 345 statewide, but not all are getting involved with the recreational game.
How will recreational marijuana be taxed? Which is proving nerve racking thanks to the states ignorance causing disastrous potential to the pro-sales industry. Alaska could begin retail sales next year.
Pettinger noted that while the tax revenues will be spread throughout the state, counties and cities that opt out of sales will not receive a share of the tax revenue.
With Oregon’s marijuana market coming online, there could be repercussions for local pot sales.
Clinton said he suspects Bend’s status as an oasis of legal marijuana surrounded by less marijuana-friendly counties and cities won’t last long.
