That changes this Thursday, October 1, when recreational sales will be allowed throughout the state’s medical marijuana dispensaries, reports the Associated Press.

Medical marijuana patients don’t need to be 21 however – they just need a valid Oregon medical marijuana card. Owners were required to submit a form to OHA and be approved before Thursday.

The Legislature did pass Senate Bill 460, allowing early recreational sales from dispensaries and did include a provision for cities to opt out for the time being.
As a temporary stop-gap to prevent black market sales, medical marijuana dispensaries will be allowed to sell recreational marijuana tax-free. While the consumption of recreational pot became legal on July 1, 2015, the state has lagged behind the demand and won’t be ready to begin regulated sales until sometime in 2016. Their charge, unfortunately, wasn’t to decide whether any legal sales of marijuana in the community was good for society or not. And while adults buying recreational pot can only purchase it once a day at a given dispensary, Taylor said, people can “dispensary hop”, depleting product supply across a city. When you use marijuana in front of them, they may want to use it, too.
Marijuana purchased within the state of Oregon, must remain within the states boundaries. However, concentrates, extracts, edibles, topicals, and other marijuana products can only be sold to OMMP patients and caregivers, and are not for sale for recreational use. The state tax should be 17% and local cities or counties can enact an additional 3% tax, bringing the total to 20%.
Lois Pariseau of Gras Cannabis in Portland, a dispensary that opened four months ago, said she has had people coming to the store for weeks asking about early sales.
