Oregon RB Thomas Tyner will miss season after shoulder surgery

Oregon’s depth behind star running back Royce Freeman took a hit over the weekend, as the Ducks’ No. 2 back, Thomas Tyner, had season-ending shoulder surgery.

After successful surgery, Tyner is expected to make a full recovery and rejoin the Ducks in 2016.

Marshall ran for 1,038 yards in 2013 with 13 TDs, but moved to slot receiver last season where excelled with 74 receptions for 1,003 yards and six scores.

Oregon Ducks fans got some bad news on the eve of fall camp for the defending Rose Bowl Champions.

Tyner appeared in 11 games last season, gaining 573 yards and scoring five touchdowns.

It’s a question that could have a logical explanation, but with some of Oregon’s other skill players on offense coming off of injuries, the significance of Tyner’s loss isn’t to be discounted.

He missed the following game versus California, but played out the rest of the season. Helfrich said his status going forward is unclear. Marshall was Oregon’s leading receiver last season. At media day following Monday’s walk-through, UO coach Mark Helfrich said Tyner won’t participate in preseason camp but otherwise didn’t elaborate on a timeline for his return to the team; Bair has opted to retire from football.

Sophomore Kani Benoit and freshmen Tony Brooks-James and Taj Griffin also will be in the mix at backup running back.

Those hoping for any form of updated timeline regarding the arrival of transfer quarterback Vernon Adams will be disappointed – but, at this point, not surprised – that there, again, was none. He also rushed for 1,232 yards and 11 touchdowns.
