Oregon State G Isaac Seumalo should help protect new QBs

The Eagles only made one selection Friday in the NFL Draft, Oregon State offensive guard Isaac Seumalo with the No. 79 overall pick in Round 3.

He’s the first offensive lineman the Eagles have drafted since Lane Johnson was taken fourth overall in 2013 out of Oklahoma.

The Eagles went for an area of need with the selection.

Seumalo started 37 games over three years, though he missed time last spring after breaking his left foot in the final game of the 2014 season.

“As a competitor and player, I want to come in and play right away”, Seumalo said.

And while he’s undersized by NFL standards height wise to play tackle, he has played the position effectively at the Pac-12 level when injuries necessitated it, using quickness, handwork, and overall football iq to get the job done, and could be used in an emergency at the position by the Eagles as well.

“I’ve always been a quick learner”, Seumalo said in a conference call. I’m gonna come in an compete my butt off.”The 6-5, 298-pound Seumalo figures to compete at left guard, where Allen Barbre is the returning starter”.

Seumalo played guard and left tackle for the Beavers last season.

Drafting a player to replace Kelce is probably out of the question at this point, but the Eagles could certainly use a player who can play multiple positions along the offensive line, including center. With four picks on Sunday, the Eagles could add another lineman. Guys that are athletic who can get out on the perimeter and run, aggressive up front, have a little, as they say, “piss and vinegar” in their neck are guys that you look for. “It’s a priority for us”. They have two fifth-rounders, one sixth-rounder and two seventh-rounders.
