Original Pacific Rim star confirms he will not return for sequel

Emerging from a worrying time spent in development limbo, Pacific Rim 2 is on course to stomp into theaters on February 28, 2018. His schedule conflicted with the film’s, and thus he was not available. But he did say, “I’m very excited about it. There was one incarnation of this sequel that involved me heavily, but I was unavailable”, explained Hunnam.

Filming will soon begin on the long-gestating sequel Pacific Rim 2, and we had been under the assumption that Charlie Hunnam would be reprising the role of Raleigh Becket. “I think it’s going to be great”, the 36-year-old actor told Yahoo at Comic-Con. Although del Toro will not be directing the sequel, which is now to be hemmed by Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil Season 1), it is del Toro who has been offering scoops on the movie, given his new avatar as the producer of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.

In the same Japanese-born monster film genre (“kaiju” translates to “strange beast) as Godzilla and King Kong, Pacific Rim is a portal into a horrific future when alien sea-zillas emerge from the depths of the Pacific Ocean and attack our planet. I’m glad they’re making it”, but his shooting schedule just wouldn’t fit the demands of the PAC RIM itinerary. Earthlings try to exterminate the Kaiju with the creation of colossal mecha robots called Jaegers. Boyega will be playing the son of Stacker Pentecost, the character portrayed by Idris Elba in the first film, who also had its most iconic line: “Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!”
