The Nationals and Orioles enter their Beltway Series clinging to slim playoff hopes.

Jimenez continued to struggle with his control in Tuesday’s victory versus Boston, surrendering four runs on six hits and three walks in five frames in a no-decision. “He was mixing everything; he was nasty”.

Lackey (13-9) allowed only a first-inning homer by Jay Bruce during his 16th quality start in 16 outings at Busch Stadium. “It is a big moment for him”. Gonzalez was originally called safe but Showalter challenged the call and it was overturned.

With Wilson starting Thursday’s series finale against the Nationals, Showalter said fellow rookie right-hander Mike Wright, who had been in the rotation, will work out of the bullpen for now.

Harper got three free passes that upped his season total to 118, passing Adam Dunn’s mark of 116 in 2009.

The Yankees turn to rookie Luis Severino (4-3) as they try to catch the Blue Jays atop the AL East. Host Toronto sends Marco Estrada to the mound. The Nats have won seven of their last 10 games since suffering the damaging sweep to New York in D.C. September 7-9. One of the tidbits I saw on twitter last night was that at Machado’s age, Hall of Famer Wade Boggs hadn’t even made his Major League Baseball debut.

CARDINALS 3, REDS 1 (at St. Louis) – John Lackey pitched seven strong innings and rookie Tommy Pham continued his productive hitting for St. Louis.

So the O’s took game one of the “Battle of the Beltways”, 4-1. None of the top five hitters in the Washington batting order had a hit.

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez delivers a pitch… He allowed four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Jimenez is having a bounce-back season.

With runners on first and third, Jimenez lined a two-out single to center to make it 1-0. Junior Lake dropped a ball he should have caught, Jonathan Schoop booted a double play ball and Steve Pearce also had an error.

“It is definitely possible” to catch up, said first baseman Tyler Moore, who had three-run homer in the win.

“We have to keep fighting”. Danny Espinosa (right hamstring strain) will have an MRI Tuesday.

“We can set it up depending on everybody’s health of course and how everybody’s feeling and their off days and regular rest and all of that, ” Nationals manager Matt Williams said of his rotation. The Orioles manager didn’t commit to Jones being ready for Wednesday.

Bryce Harper and the Nationals are back within 6 games of the Mets but can't afford a letdown at home against the Orioles
