Orioles weigh options while Davis waits to choose a team

Team Cespedes is looking for a six-year, $150 million pact, hears Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe, while an official of one team that has spoken to Upton’s agent tells Bleacher Report’s Danny Knobler that he’s looking for a “long, long” contract, pointing to the asking price as too high for the current market.

With the Baltimore Orioles reportedly pulling their offer for Chris Davis off the table several weeks ago and not willing to give into his demands, the team is apparently moving into a different direction and have turned their attentions to Yoenis Cespedes.

It was reported earlier this week that the Mets are still interested in signing Cespedes to a one-year deal if his market fails to pick up, and Heyman noted that the Mets were open to a two or three-year deal with Cespedes earlier in the offseason.

Meanwhile, the Mets remain in contact with Cespedes, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Why? Cespedes is looking for a long term deal.

And the chances of Cespedes hitting that home run ball again as a Met are better than chances of winning the $1.5 billion Powerball Jackpot. However, Rosenthal notes that Cespedes is still seeking a long-term pact.

But Baltimore, who has already lost Wei-Yin Chen to the Miami Marlins this past week, may have an ace up their sleeve in having the money needed, along with the years, to land Cespedes this winter.

It’s also possible the Orioles are capitalizing on the barren market. “We’ve got seven picks in the first 100 this year”. Mets fans had all but given up hope that the Cuban-born superstar would return to Queens this offseason, but it’s now a realistic scenario that Cespedes could be back in orange and blue for 2016.

Another high ranking baseball official, and with a team not in the Cespedes hunt, was also able to confirm that the Mets may be close to re-signing Cespedes to a one or two-year deal with the Braves and two other teams in the discussion.
