Police officers stand guard down the street from the scene of a shooting involving multiple fatalities at a nightclub in Orlando, Fla., Sunday, June 12, 2016.

In seventh grade, school administrators moved Mateen to another class to “avoid conflicts with other students”.

An FBI representative said that Mateen “was organized and well prepared” for the attack, and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed that he was armed with an assault-style rifle and a handgun that he had legally bought a few days before. A little over a week before the shooting, Johnson said, Mateen searched Facebook for “Baghdadi Speech”.

An FBI source told Fox News Mateen made a total of 16 phone calls from inside the club, some to 911, others to media outlets.

But the gunman’s father, Seddique Mateen, has said he didn’t think his son was gay. It was unclear what the messages said and it was also unclear what, if anything, she knew about the attack before it was perpetrated. She told the agency that she was aware of her husband’s intentions to attack the club and tried to talk him out of it.

“(Mateen) sent him a picture of his private part, and my friend actually was attracted to him.

But the store had no name, purchase record or surveillance video to help authorities investigate, the officials said.

In a 2007 application for a gun license, he said he had never been diagnosed with a mental illness nor had any history of alcohol or substance abuse.

Agents interviewed at least one member of the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, the mosque Mateen frequented.

G4S has said that Mateen was subjected to “detailed company screening” when he was recruited in 2007 and was screened again in 2013 with no adverse findings.

Academic records obtained by Reuters showing Mateen was frequently suspended as a student added to a disturbing portrait of the long-troubled gunman.

CBS News said it had spoken to a police source who told them the 29-year-old and his wife Noor Salman communicated during the attack at Pulse on Sunday.

On Saturday night, hours before the rampage, Mateen visited Disney Springs, an outdoor restaurant, retail and entertainment complex at Walt Disney World, an official who was briefed on the case but insisted on anonymity to discuss the continuing investigation told The Associated Press.
