Oroville Mercury Register: 4 mountain lion sightings in San Francisco, Presidio

SAN FRANCISCO – A mountain lion spotted as many as four times in San Francisco last week is believed to have left town, making its way down the coast, a San Francisco Animal Care and Control spokeswoman said today.

As there have been no sightings since last Friday, wildlife experts believe the mountain lion has made his way south down the Peninsula, Campbell said. Three others were reported by members of the public and not independently confirmed, the newspaper reports. On June 30, it was spotted in Sea Cliff and in the Western Presidio; on July 1, it was cruising the 1000 block of Gough Street; and on July 3, it was slinking around Lake Merced. Surveillance cameras recently captured an image of the mountain lion. But officials say sightings regularly occur through undeveloped areas of Marin and San Mateo, but in not usually in San Francisco. In past epochs, the sightings might be taken as a really bad sign, or in literature and art used as an example of deep societal confusion.

Mountain lions typically are wary of humans.

Do not turn your back or run.

Give the mountain lion room to run away. Do not corner it.

Speak loudly and firmly. Instead, make noise and wave your arms to make yourself seem bigger.
