Ortiz Homers After Being Honored, Red Sox Beat Tigers 3-2

As soon as the inning ended, the game entered another rain delay that lasted about an hour. Porcello only allowed two runs and the Sox offense scored him 4 in the 1st inning alone. Martinez’s two-run homer in the second inning.

Boston has now won eight of the last nine games and is currently 5-1 on their current road trip.

For six years, Porcello was the young starter that was supposed to blossom into an ace, but he never quite got there. Mookie Betts singled promptly afterwards, setting Hanley Ramirez with a good run scoring opportunity. Andrew Benintendi and Dustin Pedroia followed with RBI singles to knock Fulmer out of the game.

Uncharacteristically, Betts grounded into a tailor-made double play. Upton seemed to have little doubt that he’d just tied the game, but Jackie Bradley Jr. thought he had a chance, going for the leaping grab at the wall as Upton leisurely rounded first. According to oddsmakers at BetDSI, both teams have equal odds in this game, as the Tigers and Red Sox each have -105 odds to win.

Ortiz gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the first with his 22nd career homer at Comerica Park – a blast deep into the stands in right field. It also gave Ortiz 1,500 RBIs as a member of the Red Sox.

The Boston Red Sox have been doing a lot of winning the past few weeks but need more to capture first in the AL East.

Papi is now 1 homer and 3 RBI away from his 10th 30-homer, 100-RBI of his career, in his final season no less. The Tigers took game one of this series on Thursday, 4-3, with a comeback effort.

Tyler Naquin followed Jose Ramirez’s game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk-off inside-the-park homer to lift the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

– Brad Ziegler finished out the seventh with a strikeout to Upton and a groundout.

– Matt Barnes was called upon in the eighth inning and dealt a leadoff walk to McCann and a one-out walk to Ian Kinsler. He, too, would struggle to put up a clean inning, alternating easy outs with free passes, putting two men on for Miguel Cabrera and leaving John Farrell to turn to Craig Kimbrel for a four-out save. “That set him up to get able to get through the ninth”.

J.D. Martinez: Just another dinger for the Tigers’ slugger who has looked great since returning from his injury. Unfortunately, Casey McGehee struck out to end the game.

– Ortiz also reached the 1,400 run plateau tonight. With Xander Bogaerts on base, Daniel Norris gave Ortiz a hanging slider right in his wheelhouse.

– Boston’s 5-8 hitters were a combined 0-for-14 with eight strikeouts. To have success against him my first start against those guys was good and all. And they’ll start today’s game against Owens, filling in for Eduardo Rodriguez, who has a sore hamstring.
