Ortiz’s blast lifts Red Sox past Blue Jays

The victory cuts Boston’s lead atop the AL East to just one game and also ended the Red Sox’s three game win streak.

Travis’ eight home runs, 35 RBI, and 38 runs in 62 games last season were seen as a harbinger of things to come. Boston’s bullpen was the deciding factor in this game, as they only gave up two runs the rest of the game.

Tampa Bay’s Matt Andriese gave up one run in five innings to notch his first win since June and steer the Rays to a 4-2 win at the New York Yankees, ending the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak. In his one start this season against Toronto, he allowed six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Travis had three hits for the Blue Jays and is 6-for-9 in the first two games of the series. “Starters have been getting hit around a little bit, we haven’t been scoring many runs … that, usually, adds up to defeat”.

Hernandez (11-5) allowed six hits, struck out two and walked one while improving to 12-3 at the 50-year-old Coliseum.

– Miami Marlins rookie Jose Urena finished one out shy of a complete-game shutout in Sunday’s 3-0 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kennedy (11-9) walked four, but Adam Eaton’s leadoff single was the only hit off the right-hander in six innings. The offense climbs right back into it. James Loney also went deep and Seth Lugo worked seven strong innings to help the Mets regain control of the final NL wild-card berth, a half-game ahead of St. Louis. Smyly is 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in five career games at Rogers Centre, including three starts.

Clay Buchholz lasted just three innings in his start, allowing five runs in a awful third inning, which was capped off by a grand slam by Troy Tulowitzki.

ATLANTA – Yoenis Cespedes hit a grand slam for NY, and Seth Lugo won his fourth straight start. The shortstop punished him for his predictability, crushing a grand slam to left to make it six Toronto runs in just three innings of work.

DODGERS 5, MARLINS 0: Left-hander Rich Hill was pulled after pitching seven ideal innings for the Dodgers, who wound up with a combined two-hitter. It was Benoit, then with the Detroit Tigers, who yielded a tying grand slam in the eighth inning of Game 2 of the American League Championship Series.

Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts singled against Bo Schultz (0-1) before Benoit came on to face Ortiz, who swung and missed the first pitch but connected on the second. Anthony Rendon then doubled to the wall in left-center field to bring in Harper for the go-ahead run, and later scored on a passed ball by the catcher.

Tyler Holt’s three hits and three RBIs highlighted the Reds’ 13-hit attack in an 8-0 romp over Pittsburgh. Many, many times we’ve shown the ability to put up a quality offensive game.

The Sox sent Koji Uehara out for the 8th inning and he was able to pitch a whole inning by himself.

Ortiz, with a surfer’s “hey, man” way of speaking was simply appreciative of another day of success in what has been a highly productive final season.

Russell Martin led off the bottom of the second with a walk and he scored on the 20th home run of the season by Upton, a shot to left on a 1-1 fastball. Adrian Beltre was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Rangers, whose magic number to win the AL West is 10.

But in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz up to bat against Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura, Ella’s earlier pleas suddenly seemed prescient.

NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2 Gio Gonzalez pitched seven sharp innings for host Washington, and Anthony Rendon doubled home the tiebreaking run.

Marte had three hits for Seattle, and Mike Zunino homered and doubled.

Boston did itself a big favor Monday, handing the Orioles a lopsided 12-2 loss that dropped Baltimore three games back in the AL East race. Pedroia capped the rally with a two-run single off Ryan Tepera.
