It did, of course, but it wasn’t alone. Best animated feature film went to “Inside Out”, Pixar’s eighth win in the category since it was created in 2001.

What else? “The Big Short”, got a Best Adapted Screenwriter Award.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests said in a statement on Sunday that children are the real winners at the Academy Awards. “That is the power of film”.

He continued with a direct call to the pontiff.

Perhaps the most pointed line of the monologue wove in a broader political issue: “This year things are going to be a little different”, he said.

Singer paid tribute to abuse survivor Phil Saviano as he picked up the prize for best original screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards earlier in February.

Rock ensured that the topic remained at the forefront throughout the proceedings, usually finding hearty laughs in the process.

The annual Spirit Awards, held over lunch in a tent on Southern California’s Santa Monica beach the day before the Oscars, offer a laidback setting for nominees and guests to let their hair down.

Among the bigger surprises of the night was the Oscar that didn’t go to Sylvester Stallone, the presumptive supporting actor victor for his generous portrayal of the aging pugilist in the Rocky sequel/spinoff, Creed. Leo “finally” won the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of frontiersman Hugh Glass in “The Revenant”. Ruffalo was nominated for his supporting role as the reporter Mike Rezendes, and McAdams for her supporting role as reporter Sacha Pfeiffer.

The gonzo dystopian action film “Mad Max: Fury Road”, a summer action thriller that proved one of the dark horses of this Oscar season, had a strong showing, pulling in six awards, including for editing, costume design and production design.

Director Tom McCarthy was also nominated but lost out to The Revenant’s Alejandro González Iñárritu. “They deserve to be congratulated for their courage and tenacity in making quality independent film”. Leonardo DiCaprio took home his first Oscar for best actor for The Revenant and Brie Larson took home the Oscar for best actress for Room.

I did see “Son of Saul”, over the weekend. It was for Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”.

Just after a commercial break, host Chris Rock told a story about how he has spent so much time working on the Oscars that he hasn’t helped his daughter sell Girl Scout cookies.

Down the street from the Dolby Theatre, Rev. Al Sharpton led several dozen demonstrators in protest against a second straight year of all-white acting nominees. “Jada’s gonna boycott the Oscars?”

Some celebrities were attending an event in Flint, Michigan, #JusticeForFlint.

Rock also sought to add perspective to the turmoil.

Common, who won an Oscar a year ago for his song “Glory”, said the film community is aware there’s a problem, but now it’s time “to work toward a solution”.

“While change is often hard, it is necessary”, Boone Isaacs said. She is a great role model. “You’d all be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now”.
