Oscar host, producer, others honor black women in Hollywood

“Hopefully this award show will create a dialogue that will get things moving as far as the Oscars is concerned”, he said.

“A lot of us in this audience know the importance of visibility, especially during a time, in a society, in a world, in an industry that’s telling us that we’re invisible”, she said.

Hosting the Oscars is seen as the ultimate honor in show business but no one has a trickier task of balancing humor, diversity politics and celebrating movies on Sunday than Chris Rock. Here are my thoughts on the major categories.

Only two of the past decade’s Best Picture champs have won six or more Oscars: “The Hurt Locker” had an even half dozen (Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing) while “Slumdog Millionaire” won eight (Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Cinematography, Score, Song and Sound Mixing).

I do believe many of us would heave a sigh of relief at the prospect of a vast cultural silence.

Sometimes, this award is given for survival.

No question here: Brie Larson, so harrowing and so remarkable in “Room“, has swept up every imaginable award this season, and will do so again. Everyone knows the 2007 best picture victor, “The Departed”, is a must-see (especially in these parts), but who remembers the other nominees?

Leonardo DiCaprio, the actor is struggling from 1994 but never gets an Oscar; he has been nominated three times as Best Actor. Since the Oscar nominations were announced back in January, the Alejandro Iñárritu movie has been mentioned nearly 11 million times on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Is it biased? Oscar Management says that it all depends on public voting. He is now up against Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”) and Matt Damon (“The Martian”). Other Oscar boycotters who will be joining her include comedian Hannibal Buress and Ryan Coogler, director of Creed, whose Sylvester Stallone is nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. “At the end of the day, judging from what I’ve seen, the fact is there are more stories being told with Caucasian protagonists”. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.

Perhaps you’ve heard that Idris Elba, who was terrific in “Beasts of No Nation”, won the SAG award in this category and wasn’t even nominated here?

First, the Producers Guild heralded the journalism heroics of “Spotlight“. He edges out The Big Short’s Christian Bale (27%) as well as The Revenant’s Tom Hardy (24%).
