The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is made up of some 6,000 members who work in the film industry and who select the nominees for the Oscars.

Fury Road now has a nomination for Best Picture, Best Director for George Miller, a Film Editing nod and nominations for Production Design, Visual Effects, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. Michael Keaton was not nominated for supporting actor but “Spotlight” is competing for best picture along with “The Big Short”, “Bridge of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Martian”, “The Revenant” and “Room”.
The nominees for best actress are Blanchett (“Carol”), Brie Larson (“Room”), Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”), Lawrence (“Joy”) and Rampling (“45 Years”).
Oscar nominees for Best Actor: (from left) Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender, Eddie Redmayne, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Alicia Vikander picked up a supporting actress nomination for her role as the wife of a transgender pioneer in “The Danish Girl“.
Some were outraged that Sylvester Stallone-widely seen as a sentimental favorite-was nominated for best supporting actor for “Creed” instead of Jordan.
The only best-picture contender without a white protagonist is “Straight Outta Compton”, which has an outside shot of joining the favourites.
In fact, while “The Force Awakens” has already brought in more than $1.7 billion worldwide, the combined box office of all eight films nominated for best picture is $1.3 billion. Will Smith came up empty-handed for his highly publicized NFL Drama “Concussion”, and Idris Elba was denied a nod for “Beasts of No Nation”.
Get ready to be reacquainted with last year’s hashtag, #OscarsSoWhite. Critics seem to suggest that this year he has finally some bigger opportunities of being recognized for his pristine performance at The Revenant, a film that was shot under freezing temperatures with natural lights.
Other nominations I was happy to see included the delightful “Shaun the Sheep Movie” and the touching Studio Ghibli film “When Marnie Was There” besting better known films like “Minions” and “The Good Dinosaur” in the Best Animated Feature category. The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Pixar Animation, Lucasfilm and this station.
Of the eight films nominated for “Best Picture”, the biggest omission of the bunch is Todd Haynes’ “Carol”, a rapturous and deeply felt drama about a 1950s romance between two women.
The Oscars will be held February 28 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.
“Bridge of Spies”: Reopens Friday at Visalia theaters.

If you don’t know who Charlotte Rampling is, then you’re missing out on the spectacular career of an actress who has been working for 50 years. But the smaller the nominated films are, the bigger the potential impact of nominations.
