South African sentencing guidelines rule non-dangerous prisoners should spend only one-sixth of a prison sentence behind bars.

Pistorius was sentenced under a specific section of the Criminal Procedure Act.

The 28-year-old is to leave prison on Friday after the parole board agreed to place him under “correctional supervision”.

The Paralympic athlete is to be released on August 21 after he was recommended for early release. What are Pistorius’s parole conditions?

While on house arrest, Pistorius will likely be allowed to continue track training and serve his community service.

The reports indicate Pistorius will serve the rest of his sentence in house arrest at his uncle’s mansion outside of Pretoria.

Will he race competitively again?

Outrage was sparked when it was reveled the star, known as “blade-runner”, will be released from prison so early into his sentence.

By then he will be aged 33, some way past the peak age for most professional sprinters.

What are the Steenkamps saying?

Reeva Steenkamp’s parents say they’re still struggling to come to terms with their loss. If released some suggest it sends the wrong message to others since Oscar Pistorius is considered a role model. However, the prosecutors from South Africa have filed an appeal before the court requesting a conviction on him for murdering his girlfriend in order to restrict his release. The prosecuting authority has steadfastly maintained that he should be convicted of murder.

The court has not yet set an exact date for the start of the appeal, court registrar Paul Myburgh said, but it will be this November.

What does the appeal involve?

The judge who was handling Pistorius’ case, Judge Thokozile Masipa acquitted the paralympian of murder last September. The main tenet of their appeal is that it doesn’t really matter who he thought was behind that door.

Pistorius’s time in Waterkloof could be short-lived if state prosecutors succeed in overturning the verdict.
