A South African parole board announced last week that it had approved Pistorius’s placement under house arrest and correctional supervision for the remainder of his sentence.
Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide in October past year.
August 17: Prosecutors file an appeal calling for Pistorius to be convicted of murder.
“Oscar Pistorius was placed under correctional supervision tonight”, correctional services department spokesman Manelisi Wolela said in a statement.
The South African athlete has spent almost one year in jail after shooting Reeva through a locked bathroom door. “They carry it out in the best interest of all parties concerned, the victims, the offender and the Department of Correctional Services”, Wolela stated.
Pistorius, a gun nut, will also be barred from owning firearms and be required to see a shrink, said Masutha.
The house arrest will take place at the home of Pistorius’ uncle in a wealthy section of Pretoria. The appeal will be heard on November. 3, according to the BBC.
He faces a maximum of 15 years in prison if he is convicted by a panel of judges.
Pistorius claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder and feared for his life.
“They are not surprised at all [about attempts for release] – it was expected”, Tania Koen, a lawyer acting on behalf of Ms Steenkamp’s family said in June. “Oscar is keen to become involved in assisting children in whatever opportunity will present”, said Rohan Kruger, one of Pistorius’ defense team.
