After shooting Steenkamp dead through a bathroom door, Pistorius was originally sentenced to five years imprisonment in October 2014 before being released on house arrest 12 months later.

The South African is now serving a six year sentence for fatally shooting his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in his home on Valentine’s Day, 2013.

The cuts on his wrist prompted speculation that he attempted suicide in his cell at Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria. The prescribed minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years, though a judge can reduce that penalty in some circumstances.

Prison authorities said the Paralympic gold medalist injured himself after falling out of bed.

“We have just seen Oscar and he is doing well”, Carl Pistorius said on Twitter Sunday.

According to the publication, Pistorius was returned to prison in a three-car blue-light convoy, driven by officials wearing balaclavas.

After first being found guilty of culpable homicide, an appeals court upgraded his conviction to murder in December past year.

A prison spokesman said the injuries sustained to the South African were “minor” and that the blade runner had returned to prison after Saturday’s incident.

Prosecutors described the current term as “shockingly too lenient” and “disproportionate to the crime of murder committed”.

He admitted killing Steenkamp but said he mistook her for an intruder at his home, BBC added. Anneliese Burgess, a spokeswoman for the Pistorius family, said there would be no statement on the action at this stage.
