Hanson also directed the 2002 Eminem biopic, ‘8 Mile’.
An LAPD spokesman said he had “died of natural causes”.
Others have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the legendary filmmaker.
Update: In a statement, Eminem said, “Curtis Hanson believed in me and our insane idea to make a rap battle movie set in Detroit”.
Curtis Lee Hanson was born on March 24, 1945, in Reno, Nev., but grew up in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. The film starring Rebecca De Mornay as a revenge-seeking nanny became a major hit.
Hanson went on to direct 1994’s “The River Wild” with Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon. Man, that scene was so brilliant and must have been such a thrill to direct.
“L.A. Confidential” was the film that thrust Hanson into the forefront of American filmmakers in 1997. The film revolved around corruption, intrigue and murder amoung cops and Hollywood figures in 1950s Los Angeles.
“Curtis Hanson and one of the most underrated curious directors of his generation”. However, he still managed to get so much out of this concept, despite the fact that he was not familiar with the movie’s theme. In addition to Basinger, Hanson populated the movie with relative unknowns such as Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce in order to upend audience expectations about where the players might fall on the good/bad divide. “I mean if you don’t believe that then what are you left with?” Other late-career credits include the critically-lauded Michael Chabon adaptation Wonder Boys, In Her Shoes starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette and Shirley Maclaine and Lucky You, a poker drama starring Drew Barrymore and Eric Bana.
“We had an extraordinary ensemble of actors in “L.A”. Eminem would win the Oscar for best song for Lose Yourself.
