Oscars 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio hints he should have won for previous films

When nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, “Spotlight”, the acclaimed drama about The Boston Globe’s reporting of the Catholic Church clergy abuse scandal, was nominated for best picture, director (Tom McCarthy), original screenplay, editing, and supporting performances by Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams.

Winslet, 40, who also starred with DiCaprio in “Revolutionary Road” in 2008, is herself Oscar-nominated for “Steve Jobs” in the best supporting actress category.

Mad Max: Fury Road” is an action film, the fourth instalment in the Mad Max franchise, which is set in a future desert wasteland where gasoline and water are scarce commodities.

Comedian Chris Rock, who is hosting the ceremony on February 28, also weighed in on Twitter.

The best actress field is led by favorite Brie Larson for “Room”, along with Lawrence, Blanchett (her seventh nod), Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) and Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years”).

The actor, who has also been nominated for his acting roles in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator and Blood Diamond, said it is unlikely he would ever make a physically grueling film like The Revenant again.

No actors or actresses of color received nominations for their work in film this year. There weren’t any major surprises in the Best Picture category, which can house anywhere between five and 10 nominees. We have got to speed it up. This year, it went with eight: “The Revenant“, “Mad Max”, “Spotlight”, “The Martian”, “Brooklyn”, “Room”, “The Big Short” and “Bridge of Spies”.

“You have given our film the strongest of spotlights on a subject matter so crucial for many women across the world today”, Deniz Gamze Erguven, the Franco-Turkish director of “Mustang”, told AFP. He added, “I was not expecting it… especially at this time in my life”.

“Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu himself was nominated for his work on “The Revenant“. I’m proud to be opposite him in that film because I think it’s an extraordinary performance”.

Smith, whose husband had been nominated for a Golden Globe but snubbed for the Oscars, continued: People can only treat us in the way in which we allow.
