Oscars 2016: Will Leonardo DiCaprio win the elusive Oscar this year?

Leonardo DiCaprio is not nervous about whether he will finally win an Oscar – because he says the hard work of actually shooting the film is over.

This is the fourth Mad Max movie, but the first to be in Oscar contention.

“The one reassuring thing about all this award season stuff is that you have absolutely no control over the outcome”, he told BBC radio. While Fassbender is unlikely to win on the night, you have to think that an Oscar is on the horizon for this terrific actor.

Lastly, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was this year’s biggest grossing film.

Perhaps the DiCaprio curse even affects his directors, as The Revenant’s Alejandro G. Iñárritu is nominated for Best Director, though Variety predicts Mad Max: Fury Road’s George Miller is slated to take home the golden statue.

“The Martian”, which trailed the top two films with seven nominations, picked up a best-actor nomination for Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded alone on Mars.

‘To sit here looking at receiving that many nominations for this film, it not only feels good but it also feels like people have a yearning to see a different type of film’.

The only best-picture contender without a white protagonist is “Straight Outta Compton”, which has an outside shot of joining the favorites. Their respective directors also were among five nominated for prizes from the Directors Guild of America, whose winners often align with the Oscars.

Why did the achingly poignant lesbian love story “Carol” rack up six nods – including Blanchett for best actress and Rooney Mara for supporting actress – but get inexplicably shut out of the best picture and director categories?

There was more Irish talented in the spotlight on Thursday as Lenny Abrahamson and Emma Donoghue were nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for their work on Room, which was nominated for Best Picture.

Meanwhile, the ceremony will take place on February 28 will be hosted by comedian Chris Rock.
