Oscars diversity row may provide drama at Evening Standard film awards
Meanwhile, Amy Winehouse film Amy landed another accolade for Best Documentary, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was named Blockbuster of the Year, 45 Years was given the Editor’s Award, and actor and author Alan Bennett was recognised for his achievements in film with the Outstanding Contribution prize.

The green-room chat would be worth listening to when Charlotte Rampling and Idris Elba, two magnificent British actors who have taken starkly opposed positions on one of the most contentious issues in film today, meet at an awards ceremony in London.
But other than watching the hilarious fallout from DiCaprio’s vaping marathon, what good are things like the SAG Awards – or their upcoming industry brethren, the Writers Guild Awards and Directors Guild Awards? But, as this year’s nominations have shown no appearance of diversity, the award shows like SAG, Critics Choice Awards and BAFTAs have been the stomping grounds of diversity supremacy this year.
The Evening Standard Film Awards were held last night in London. “They will not go down well with American Oscar voters at all”. It would be the second straight year that the show and as well as Aduba won the award.
For the Drama Ensemble, “Downton Abbey” took the award for the best show while Kevin Spacey and Viola Davis won the best actor and actress awards, respectively. 17 out of 21 SAG best lead actor winners have gone on to win the Oscar for the same category. The WGA Awards are a little more wobbly; while the show isn’t until February 13th, voting closed on January 29th, and Original Screenplay category is the category that guild awards have had the hardest time predicting over the past 10 years.
Rampling, who is up for best actress for her performance in 45 Years, sparked controversy when she told a French radio station that criticism of the Academy was “racist to white people” – words she later claimed had been misinterpreted. The SAG has honoed Idris Elba and gave the top prize to the movie Spotlight.

Acting veterans and rising stars are set to attend tonight’s Evening Standard British Film Awards. While some have valid concerns, this piece was so arrogantly, ignorantly tone deaf and offensive that I had to point it out – and the decision to publish it in the first place.
