Oscars history beckons for Leonardo DiCaprio

Will Leonardo DiCaprio finally have an Oscar statue to put on his mantle by the end of the weekend? Both of them have WGA wins this year and point to a possible nod on this year’s Oscars.

The composer and producer, who earned seven Oscar nods before receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1994 and producing the Academy Awards in 1996, said Saturday that he met with academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs and plans to speak to the organization’s other officials in the coming weeks.

Hosted by actor and comedian Chris Rock, the Oscars 2016 will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California on 28 February 2016.

Boycotts became a topic on January 18, after director and actor Spike Lee posted a picture to his instagram of a young Martin Luther King Jr. accompanied by the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag and a small anecdote which expressed his disappointment about the Academy’s choices. But they claimed that Chris Rock might address the issue.

Leonardo’s career has spanned more than 20 years, and seen him star in a dazzling list of hit films, but so far an Oscar has eluded him despite a number of nominations. The talented American actor has failed to bag the prestigious award after delivering some of the best performances over more than two decades. Check out this compilation of the contenders for Best Picture from Fandango. Unfortunately, many believe the Academy showed an unfair bias and neglected to recognize talented performances in films like Straight Outta Compton, Concussion, and Creed.

Playing the role of a developmentally disabled person, and acting beside the talented and dashing Johnny Depp, DiCaprio made his first ever Oscar nomination with this movie. I’d be thinking “this shit is live”.

Alright, so who will win stuff? Each fits the idea template for the kind of “old school” movie the Academy goes insane for, but without those previous wins, they don’t stand much of a chance.

“The thought and planning that went into Wide World of Sports is the same thought and planning that goes into the Oscars”.

According to the odds, “The Revenant” is the favourite victor for Best Picture -followed by “Spotlight” and “The Big Short”; Alejandro G. Iñárritu, director of “The Revenant” is expected to win an Oscar as best director, competing against George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”) and Adam McKay (“The Big Short”).

Traditionally, every year has also had a small film or two that deservedly get into the Best Film category. Brie Larsson is the most bet-on Best Actress nominee for lead role in Room.
