“The Big Short”, “Brooklyn”, “Carol“, “The Martian”, “Room“.
Jennifer Jason Leigh as a killer being transported to the hangman in “The Hateful Eight, received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight“, as did Alicia Vikander, as the wife of an artist who undergoes gender reassignment surgery, in “The Danish Girl, and Rachel McAdams as an investigative reporter in “Spotlight“.
Although 10 slots have been available for best picture nominees since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences changed the rules in 2011, Academy voters selected only eight. The nominees for original screenplay are Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer for “Spotlight“, Matt Charman, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen for “Bridge of Spies”, “Ex Machina” director-writer Alex Garland, Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff for “Straight Outta Compton” and “Inside Out” scribes Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley.
Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s The Revenant led all films with 12 nominations. Remember: Iñárritu is the same person who won three Oscars previous year for Birdman.
The best actress field is led by favorite Brie Larson for “Room“, along with Jennifer Lawrence (for “Joy“, making her, at 25, the youngest four-time nominee), Cate Blanchett (her seventh nod, for “Carol“), Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn“) and Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years“).
Other notable names who missed out on nominations: screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, whose screenplay for “Steve Jobs” was overlooked; Quentin Tarantino, who received neither a directing nor a screenwriting nomination for “The Hateful Eight”; and Helen Mirren, who didn’t make the cut for best supporting actress. The postapocalyptic tale was second with 10 nominations, including picks for picture, director George Miller and editing.
The 69-year-old Stallone will be vying against Tom Hardy, nominated for “The Revenant“, Mark Ruffalo for “Spotlight“, Christian Bale for “The Big Short” and Mark Rylance for “Bridge of Spies“.
However, it was named in the best animated feature category, alongside the Bristol-made film Shaun The Sheep Movie.
The Best Original Song category has two shining stars in Sam Smith and The Weeknd, nominated for “Earned It” (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) and “Writings on the Wall” (“Spectre”), respectively.
Best foreign language film: “Son of Saul”, “Mustang”, “A War”, “Embrace of the Serpent”, “Theeb”.
Fans of the box office behemoth “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” were looking to see if the movie gets any love from the academy. Male filmmakers are again expected to dominate best director.
John Williams, who scored the film, now boasts the record for most Academy Award nominations of any living person, with 50. Walt Disney was nominated 59 times.
Another record breaker this year is Steven Spielberg, who produced and directed “Bridge of Spies“.
