He has been nominated an astonishing five times, and his first nomination came when he was just 19 for his role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
Netflix, which has previously scored nominations for documentaries, fell short in its first bid for fiction film nods.

“It’s great that this character that has carried me along all these years is getting respect”, Stallone told Variety magazine. The actor won a Golden Globe Award on Sunday night and was given a standing ovation.
Costume Design: “Carol“, “Cinderella”, “The Danish Girl”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”. A best picture nomination may have been a bit of a long shot for the highest-grossing film in US history, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a bit of a disappointment considering how well the film has been received. Miller says, “Needless to say we’re doing little happy jigs and it’s really nice to be invited to the party”.
“Carol”, the film about a lesbian relationship in 1950s NY, picked up acting nods for stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara but didn’t receive nominations for picture or directing.
Best Picture Release Dates: “Mad Max: Fury Road”, May 14, 2015; “The Martian“, Oct. 1, 2015; “Bridge of Spies“, Oct. 15, 2015; “Room“, Oct. 15, 2015; “Brooklyn”, Nov. 4, 2015; “Spotlight”, Nov. 5, 2015; “The Big Short”, Dec. 10, 2015; and “The Revenant”, Dec. 25, 2015. So, stock up for Room, Mad Max, The Big Short and especially The Revenant.
The 88th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 28. This year’s Best Supporting Actor line-up is formidable – particularly Mark Rylance and the surprise inclusion of Tom Hardy in The Revenant – but Stallone is the feel-good story of the awards race. Although “Straight Outta Compton”, the blockbuster biopic about African-American gangster rap pioneers N.W.A., received a Best Screenplay nomination, it’s black director F. Gary Gray was not included in the best director category.
The 88th annual Academy Award nominations for best visual effects have been announced.
In the race to win the Best Original Score, the nominees are “Bridge of Spies”, “Carol”, “The Hateful Eight”, “Sicario” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“.
In the best foreign language film category, Colombia’s entry “El abrazo de la serpiente”, directed by Ciro Guerra, is in the running along with “A War” (Denmark), “Mustang” (France), “Son of Saul” (Hungary) and “Theeb” (Jordan). A Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild nominee, the former Jack Sparrow seemed like a logical bet for a Best Actor Oscar nod.
The films lost to “Earned it” (“Fifty Shades of Grey”), “Manta ray” (“Racing Extinction”), “Simple song 3″ (“Youth”), “Til it happens to you” (“The Hunting Ground”) and “Writing’s on the wall” (“Spectre”) in the Best Original Song category.
Watching Sylvester Stallone win a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor was magical.
Of course, the Academy chose not to ignore the biggest movie of the year – and of all time, at least in North America – Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic “The Martian” landed seven nominations, including best picture and best actor for Matt Damon, but, surprisingly, no best director nod for Scott. Minutes later, it was déjà vu in the Best Picture category. Joining him were Miller, Adam McKay for The Big Short, Lenny Abrahamson for Room and Tom McCarthy for Spotlight.

The acting nominees, which notably omitted Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation and Benicio Del Toro for Sicario, gave the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences an awkward repeat of the OscarsSoWhite backlash that followed last years acting nominees.
