#OscarsSoWhite explodes on social media, Academy president responds
Micheal Keaton and Rachel McAdams in “Spotlight”.

Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, diplomatically told Deadline that she too wishes the field of nominees were more diverse.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” is up for ten Oscars, including Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Picture. Five others are Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, Adam McKay’s The Big Short, Lenny Abrahamson’s Room and John Crowley’s Brooklyn. DiCaprio’s costar Tom Hardy is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role category.
However, Variety does predict newcomer Brie Larson will take home the Best Actress role for her role in Room, taking the award from the trophy-reaping Lawrence, who’s work in Joy has already solicited her a Golden Globe.
The nominees for best actor are DiCaprio (The Revenant), Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl).
The film “Carol” got nominations for both Best Actress, Cate Blanchett, and Best Supporting Actress, Rooney Mara. In the supporting role category I believe Sylvester Stallone’s lovable portrayal of the timeless Rocky Balboa in Creed will win him his first Oscar after nearly forty years of not even being nominated. The latter film was considered a strong contender for a best-picture nomination, having been nominated by the Producers Guild, but it was left empty-handed.
The Revenant leads this year’s nominations with 12, including a nod for latino director Alejandro González Iñárritu, but after The Academy’s drawn out attempts at diversity, #OscarsSoWhite continues to rumble on. However, movies should be a “mirror of humanity”, and the absence of non-white actors among this year’s Acting nominees is therefore regrettable.
Ice Cube is “not surprised” by ‘Straight Outta Compton’s Oscars snub. That wasn’t the case as Nick Hornby’s adapted screenplay for Brooklyn took its place.
Finally, we have the Best Picture category that every movie strives to win. The Oscars will be presented on February 28, 2016, in Los Angeles.
