Picking up his second award of the night for Luther, Elba said in his speech: “Two awards – I don’t know what to say”.
Orange star Uzo Aduba won best comedy actress, Queen Latifah won best actress in a miniseries for HBO’s Bessie and Viola Davis won best drama actress for ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder. We can only hope that the Film Academy for the Academy Awards will follow the SAG’s lead for the Oscars in 2017.
“I’m just saying, plop your money down to see “Race”, to see ‘Dope, ‘ to see ‘Straight Outta Compton, ‘ ” she said.
“The world is very diverse”.
Alicia Vikander, a 27-year-old Swedish actress, was named best supporting actress for her work in “The Danish Girl“.
Based in the UK, Larry is passionate about all things news and technology related.
While introducing a clip from “Beasts of No Nation”, Elba took a dig at the lack of diversity in this year’s Oscars’ nominations. “To any young actors, I encourage you to watch the history of cinema, because we stand on the shoulders of giants”, DiCaprio said.
Leonardo DiCaprio is one step closer to the Oscars after winning the Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.
“Look at this stage”, actress Laura Prepon said, gesturing to the highly diverse cast of “Orange Is The New Black” while picking up their award for best comedic ensemble.
Other winners included Downton Abbey’s third win for best drama series, Viola Davis‘s second for female actor in a drama, and Kevin Spacey’s second win for male actor in a drama.
Larson was the favourite to win on Saturday night, with Cate Blanchett (Carol), Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), and Sarah Silverman (I Smile Back) all nominated alongside her.
In a year the Oscars failed to nominate a single person of color in the major acting categories, the Screen Actors Guild had no trouble awarding people of color and diverse casts.
