– “Mad Max: Fury Road” was nominated for best picture.

As expected, Leonardo DiCaprio nabbed a best actor nomination for “The Revenant”.

Miller’s blockbuster followed closely behind the pioneer-era drama, landing 10. Fury Road now has a nomination for Best Picture, Best Director for George Miller, a Film Editing nod and nominations for Production Design, Visual Effects, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.

The nominees of this year’s Oscars were announced here on Thursday by Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, actor John Krasinski and filmmakers Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee.

The Revenant also landed a best actor nomination for DiCaprio, best director for Alejandro Inarritu and best supporting actor for Tom Hardy.

Alongside DiCaprio and Damon, the best actor nominees were: Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) and Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”).

After last year’s nominations led to the notorious hashtag #OscarsSoWhite trending, the Academy has made a public effort to increase diversity with a more varied set of board candidates and bringing back Chris Rock as host for this year’s ceremony.

On Twitter after Thursday’s nominations were announced, Rev. Al Sharpton seemed to agree.

Several of this year’s biggest films, including Straight Outta Compton, Beasts of No Nation and Concussion, were noticeably absent from the list of nominees, despite being well-received both critically and at the box office.

“May I say, I am particularly proud to be nominated as a supporting actor, as I find the level of supporting acting in films these days utterly convincing and very often extremely moving, even the smallest parts”. “I realized how special that is and I didn’t expect that to happen to me”, he said.

There were some inspiring performances by black actors in 2015, so it surprised many when all 20 Academy Awards nominees for acting were white – for the second year in a row.

Tom Nunan, an academy-award producer and lecturer at the UCLA School of Theatre Film and Television, said change would only come once the Academy expanded its membership to include more minorities.

Twentieth Century Fox (“The Revenant”, “The Martian”) led a strong year for the major studios, though two indie upstarts – Open Road (“Spotlight”) and A24 (“Room”) – notched their first best picture nods.
