Assistant Commissioner of Police K Ram Bhupal Rao told reporters that they arrested BJP MLA from Goshamahal, T Raja Singh, as a preventive measure to maintain law and order.

Singh had earlier accused the student group of “trying to play political games to derive political mileage” by organising the festival.

A lawmaker, Raja Singh, was also placed under house arrest as the authorities tried to ward against communal trouble.

There are reports of heavy police deployment at the university and the main entrance has been closed.

“We will stop the beef festival”.

Two groups of students had planned to host a beef and a pork festival on Thursday, which is also World Human Rights Day, to emphasise their right to eat what they wanted. The order was later upheld by the High Court.

On December 10, a group of students had announced to organize a “pork festival” which they claimed was a medium to assert everyone’s right to choice at a time the country is in the middle of a debate over perceived “intolerance”.

Swami Paripoornanda Saraswati condemned the attempts to hold beef festival. The judge said the festival would have violated provisions under the Prevention of Cow Slaughtering Act as well as the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
