One of Underwood’s players, 21-year-old Coger, died Thursday night after collapsing following a team workout.
Coger previously attended Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, Florida, and Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The Stillwater News Press reported this month after Coger joined the Oklahoma State team that he had surgery his senior year in high school to remove fluid from around the brain. After the exercise, Coger reportedly sat down and his teammates went to check on him and then called 911.
“No answers today. At the appropriate time we’ll delve into this and find some answers”, said OSU athletic director Mike Holder.
‘Tyrek was excited to be at Oklahoma State and had such passion for the game and was looking forward to being an OSU Cowboy, ‘ Underwood said. The 6-foot-8 player signed with Ole Miss last fall but opted for OSU after the Southeastern Conference ruled he was ineligible due to transfer rules.
Oklahoma State University continues to mourn the sudden death of one its basketball player Thursday afternoon. His cause of death has not been determined.
When he chose to play basketball again, it was in junior college with Eastern Florida State College.
According to Shutt, NCAA rules allow basketball teams to practice for eight hours per week during this time of the summer.
Elliott’s email says Coger died from cardiomegaly with left ventricular hypertrophy.
Coger’s death is the latest tragedy for OSU.
Clifton described Coger as a player who had been through a lot, but was finally on his way to a good athletic and academic career.
In 2001, two men’s basketball players – Dan Lawson and Nate Fleming, six staff members – Will Hancock, Pat Noyes, Brian Luinstra, Jared Weiberg, Kendall Durfey, and Bill Teegins, and two pilots died when their plane crashed during a snowstorm in Colorado.
