Wide receiver Kevin White was a projected starter all offseason and a minor hamstring injury was not about to prevent him from finally making his much anticipated debut. The Bears made a bold decision to move him to center just seven days before the opener and throw him into the fire.
The Houston Texans declared wide receiver Will Fuller (hamstring) and defensive end J.J. Watt (back) active for Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. But on the ensuing drive following the Fuller drop, Cutler and the Bears covered 75 yards in three plays. I just don’t see the Bears being able to keep pace with Houston, yet the Texans not scoring enough to carry the over on their own. And the last time Hoyer played in Houston, he threw four interceptions in a Texans uniform in a 30-0 playoff loss to Kansas City. Meanwhile, the offensive line will have to do a better job keeping Jay Cutler upright, or it will be a long season for the 11-year veteran. There were times when he was swallowed up by the Texans’ offensive tackles and there were others when he showed off the burst that got him drafted so high. “The play clock was running out”. The Bears are far from the toughest opponent that the Texans will see this season, so the question of can he perform against the good teams still remains up in the air.
But I guess it depends on how you look at it. What stood out the most from the Texans’ opener? I will say this again, it’s a cruel world but the National Football League is about wins and losses and as long as the Bears organization keeps being bamboozled by Cutler’s athleticism and superhuman arm strength the Bears will never be a consistent victor.
Cutler seemed to think White was going to break off for the sideline. He’ll need some time to grow. They were also overtaken by the Texans pass rush. There was a very low point there. He was also a second-team All-Pro player in 2011. This catch was a difficult snag over the middle, and it highlighted a trait of Fuller’s that he hopefully is able to outgrow – a tendency to make the difficult plays look easy, and the easy plays look difficult. Cutler has great rhythm when the offense clicks and that is what the Bears have to shake off and adjust in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field.
After two abjectly poor performances in the preseason, the Bears’ offensive line started off very strong in the first half.
Certainly, it was a welcome start for a franchise with so many unknowns at critical spots.
Osweiler has seven NFL starts (his first came a year ago in Chicago when he was with the Broncos) in which he has put together some very good halves of football, but he has yet to put together an entire game and yet to take a snap that counts in the Texans’ offense. Here are a couple of key players I will be keeping an eye on.

Perhaps Osweiler can give Hopkins some consistency at the position, although that didn’t have much of an impact on his head-turning numbers previous year.
