Osweiler, Trevathan lead Broncos to 17-3 win over Chargers

The AFC West-leading Broncos are 10-2.

When the 5-7 Eagles upset the New England Patriots 35-28 at Gillette Stadium, this gave the Broncos an early Christmas present that could be the key to a potential Super Bowl run.

What’s been uprooted is the notion the Broncos would collapse without Manning, the five-time NFL MVP.

One the season Osweiler has completed 61.5% of his passes and had a QB rating of 76.8. “We did what we had to do to stay into it”.

Osweiler finished 16 of 26 passing for 166 yards. He was intercepted once. “Working toward some football things this week, but it has been a good week for him”. Late in the second quarter San Diego Chargers safety Eric Weddle dropped a would-be interception. But Osweiler isn’t bad.

“When you have nine of them (losses), they all hurt at this point because there have been so many”, Philip Rivers said after Sunday’s performance.

The Broncos raced to a 17-0 second-quarter lead and coasted in for the win. Is there a quarterback controversy brewing?

“We’ve gotten used to it, unfortunately”, Philip Rivers said. That decision, of course, is if they should go back to Peyton Manning at quarterback when he’s healthy. The team is anxious about winning. He has an expert voice on all things National Hockey League and NFL, and now works as the Chargers beat writer for Sports Out West. Still, it’s obvious the Broncos have Manning on the slow track to recovery as they try to speed up Osweiler’s development. Right guard Louis Vasquez was active Sunday, but did not play because of a groin injury.

Towards the end of the game Denver’s All-Pro linebacker Von Miller drove Rivers in to the ground, prompting Rivers to get in Miller’s face to voice his displeasure. The two exchanged words after one of Miller’s sacks.

“I think Brock is taking advantage of an opportunity”, Kubiak said. “Just trying to be cooperative and help you out, so if that’s a problem, just let me know”. “There’s not only our football team but there’s 31 other teams out there watching it, and if you can’t show up every Sunday and play your tails off, you’re in the wrong business because you’ll get embarrassed and you’ll get exposed and other teams will see it and not many guys are going to want that”. We were the ones; coaches, players, everybody else. With Anderson out, Ronnie Hillman saw his load increase slightly. In Johnson’s stead Sunday, with Dontrelle Inman getting injured as well, the Chargers had only Malcom Floyd and Javontee Herndon available at wide receiver, plus Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green at tight end and Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead as pass-catching running backs. Bruton delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit, which was not flagged.
